[Unix-l] kernel build checklist

Over spring break I was finally able to rebuild the Linux kernel on my
laptop.   

The information on how to build a kernel can be found in several
places, including the kernel source bundle, but I've found it useful
to have my own checklist of the steps to make sure I do thinks in the
right order.  The updated checklist is at:

I also figured out a strange problem that was keeping me from getting
a good build, and that is noted in footnote 1.
