The Aug. 31 issue of Nature vol. 442, p. 973) has an interesting 
article on patenting activity of academic scientists.  More than 4000 
academic scientists, working in the life sciences, particularly the 
"patent-heavy" molecular biology and microbiology were analyzed for 
their patenting activity.  Overall, women received patents at 40% of 
the rate of men.  The original article is in Science (W. Ding, et 
al., vol. 313, 2006, p. 665-667.
